The Terrace

This is Vietnam. In the city. On a roof.
The old man sits on a chair, reading his dead wife’s diary. His son is trying to fix the TV aerial. A small parrot with a strip of cloth tied to its foot perches in a tree close by.
The old man is deaf. Or senile. The young man answers his question about the parrot over and over again.
The parrot flies away.
The old man goes inside.
The TV is still not right, but it’s better.
This is a terrace on a roof in a city in Vietnam. Life is slow and long. Things don’t exactly work. Is this the way it will be at the end?
Anything as simple as this contains the essence of beauty and so it is with Phong Ha Nguyen’s 12 minute film.
